I know that the Catholic Church is very careful before validating any
miracle story. I recall the miracle of Fatima and the famous Shroud of
Turin. I checked out original newspaper accounts of Fatima in 1917. A
mass hallucination ?
I don't think that the more paltry miracles are signs of divine intervention in our earthly affairs.But if God sends a SIGN , spectroscopic analysis is irrelevant.
The incorrigible doubters should reflect on this humorous opinion from science writer Isaac Asimov: Asimov -an atheist-said that God might forgive an honest atheist, ( " But Lord, you should have given me more evidence " ). But would God forgive a " wise guy atheist " ?
Older readers may recall the early 60s movie " The Cardinal ". An hysterical crowd gathers before a bleeding statue of Mary in the young priest's church. The ambitious , educated priest Stephen does not make fun of these immigrant Catholics vulnerable to superstition.But later he discovers the source of the " miracle "- a leaking rusty old pipe.DOMINUS VOBISCUM.
