I don't deny the general
truth of the editorial about what a mess Rhode Island is. Obviously
middle class people " suffer " from higher taxes in a way that is
impossible for poor working class people and numerous welfare recipients
and the retired elderly.
Can a reader infer from this that a lower standard of living is more acceptable for lower class people because they " suffer " less ? Even in capitalist America " middle class " is not a caste . Of course, the middle class are being " ruined ". But not by the people " below " them.
The real problem is that as a political-economic unit the STATE of Rhode is just too small. Should we remain a country of 50 nearly sovereign states -with different laws and different entrenched power structures ?
You can still LOVE the Ocean State and yet see its limitations for real change. I don't blame Governor Gina Raimondo for the facts of ARITHMETIC.
