The very pillars of WOKE in the mainstream news media and in the Democratic Party are secular, anti-CHRISTIAN Zionist Jews. And oddly enough they do not apply Critical Race Theory to APARTHEID Israel. And presently they seem to be cheer leaders for nuclear World War III with POST-COMMUNIST Russia over the glorious cause of a " sovereign " Ukraine led by that puffed up NATO " hero " war mongering president Zelensky.

I read Ron Kovic's harrowing biographical book " Born on the Fourth of July " and saw the movie starring Tom Cruise. But where is the ANTI-WAR movement today ? How can our generation that protested the Vietnam war not be super-cynical about a stupid war for a " sovereign " Ukraine ? Within the Democratic Party today ( September 2022 ) there is not a single voice raised against a coming nuclear World War III with POST-COMMUNIST Russia . Reverie of Roger William Junior high school circa 1962
My memories of this school go back to the year 1962. Then it was called Roger Williams Junior High School. The front view of the building on Thurbers Ave. - those four tall columns - always reminded me of the architecture of those splendid government buildings in ancient Rome. By the way I studied FIRST YEAR LATIN there and FIRST YEAR ALGEBRA and yes, there was also a class in ANCIENT HISTORY. In vain I tried to concentrate on " Ivanhoe " in the English Literature class. Funny I was nicknamed " Wamba " after a character in Sir Walter Scott's novel. Later in life I got around to finishing " Ivanhoe ".
I recall GYM CLASS followed by hot showers in the shower room. Then a hot lunch ( for $.35 ? ) : a favorite of mine was fish cakes with mashed potatoes and gravy , string beans and Butter Scotch pudding for dessert.
I went to Roger Williams at the same time as my younger brother Ray. We laughed at the popular music back then which could be heard on any of those transistors radios that were coming out . Crazy lyrics like " You'll be happy for the rest of your life if you make an ugly woman your wife .. get an ugly woman to marry you " . And Pat Boon's now very politically incorrect " " Speedy Gonzales " : "You better come home Speedy Gonzales, away from tannery row.
Stop all of your drinking with that floosie named Flo! ". I think the song " Monster Mash " also came out at this time: " I was working in the lab late one night when my eyes beheld an eerie sight .. "
A pillar of ORDER back then was one DONALD W. OLIVER ( later a public school official ) On my very first day at Roger Williams he spotted a kid with ATTITUDE . My legs were crossed in the auditorium . " Are you comfortable ? " he shouted in a very irate tone. When I replied " Yes " he evicted me from the auditorium . Later on Oliver and I got along just fine.
I enjoyed striking out at soft ball games in that large recreation field behind the school.
One day a light went on in my head in the ALGEBRA I class. After that I excelled in high school mathematics [ something connected with " factoring " - the F-O-I-L method ?] .
A pleasant arrangement of pumpkins and plants at my brother Johnny's beach cottage off Point Judith Rd. Design by Johnny's girl friend Chelsea . Saturday family and friends celebrated brother Michael's 65th birthday. A beautiful early fall afternoon and evening. We spotted what looked like a meteor streaking through the clear night sky. While the prolonged unemployment of millions of workers and the drastic reduction of standards for the entire class, are rapidly maturing the conditions for an enormous development of the proletarian class movement, the process is being assisted and supplemented from another quarter. The evil days which have fallen upon the professions, the small business people and the “white-collar” stratum of employees will undoubtedly have a considerable influence, even if it is primarily a negative one, in narrowing the gap between the working class movement of America and its industrial development.
Like every crisis, but on a far wider scale, the present one has the effect of hurling vast sections of these intermediary classes down into the proletariat. In the further entrenchment of big capital, and the more economical organization which ensues, the great bulk of the victims will be permanently displaced. Even more important: The chances for workers to climb into these preferred positions are correspondingly restricted.
In the American Mercury for April there is a graphic account of the ruthless swath which rationalization, spurred on by the crisis, has cut through the white-collar division of industry, from clerks to high-powered salesmen and junior executives. Many of them are dispensed with permanently as part of the waste that scientific management has learned to avoid. A whole army of people whose incomes ran into five figures are on the industrial scrapheap. Brooks Shepard, the author of the article, speaks of “former top-sergeants, lieutenants, and captains of industry” who have come to the end of their tether and face the stark problem of existence which but yesterday seemed pleasant and secure.
There are no statistics on the curtailment of professional incomes, but we know in a general way that it has been severe. Occasional news items and reports throw a revealing light on the situation. “I know lawyers with first class training and experience who are starving “ said Justice Jacob S. Strahl at a meeting of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association in Brooklyn. “One of them is reduced to peddling razor blades ... Another was arrested recently for selling tomatoes without a license.” So reports the Times for May 6.
In the hey-day of imperialist prosperity the class movement of the workers was undermined, among other things, by the opportunities for individual escape from wage labor created by the exceptional circumstances The workers’ movement was systematically robbed of its natural leaders and almost the whole class was poisoned with the psychology of individualism, fatal to class solidarity. The lesson to be read in the present plight of the white-collar elements is the closing of these avenues of escape from the proletariat, and the increasing insecurity of those who have already attained such positions.
A prolongation of this state of affairs will redound to the advantage of the labor movement. The more futile the hope of individual emancipation appears, the stronger will grow the determination of the ambitious worker’s to rise with the class. Individualism will be replaced by the class psychology of the proletariat. This development will be an important factor in liberating the unbounded energies of the American workers for the revolutionary struggle.

I was listening to " Red Eye Radio " early this morning and Eric and Gary made this point : that the LIBERAL news media never fact check Karine Jean-Pierre . She herself is a monster of deceit and misinformation. It is just not WOKE to challenge the Twilight Zone " facts " of a black woman ? I am not a conservative Republican . Socialist author Irving Howe passed away with " A Margin of Hope "
As a democratic socialist myself I do respect this wise " old radical " Irving Howe. Much of what he said in this interview is relevant to the Bernie Sanders "political revolution " , the focus on unacceptable economic inequality in the presidential campaign of 2016. But since the time of this interview what did pass for real " democracy in America " has sadly decayed . The country is evolving under the leadership of these neo-Democrats like Hillary Clinton into a militarized police state. The socialist movement can only be revived by building bridges to the world's great religions
The hard truth is that " socialism " in China is not much different from " Stalinism " in Russia in the 1930s. Leon Trotsky wrote brilliantly about " The Revolution Betrayed " before his assassination in Mexico by Stalin's agents in 1940.
Today the mainstream news media in the United States imagines that the FAR LEFT is lurking in the Bernie Sanders wing of the Democratic Party. You will not find old Bernie wrapped in a red flag hiding under a mansion room bed .
Sad to say but so many Marxist vanguard parties ( self-appointed ) - claiming to be anti-Stalinist in the tradition of Leon Trotsky - have degenerated into daffy personality cults similar to the notorious Church of Scientology with its dedicated army of " Clears ".
The biggest mistake of the old Soviet Union was to declare itself OFFICIALLY ATHEIST not long after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 - an event
that inspired the workers of the whole world.
As a longtime independent democratic socialist - while appreciating Marx's insight into capitalist exploitation and oppression - I think the socialist movement can only be revived by building bridges to the world's great religions - Catholic , Protestant , Jewish , Islam , Buddhist . Otherwise the passion for social justice can degenerate into nihilism and purely destructive mob violence.
MATTER IN MOTION is very interesting but not worthy of worship .
More than 20 years ago I was able to quickly locate a whole shelf full of books in any local public library describing the miserable failure of PUBLIC EDUCATION in the United States. And many books written by idealistic but completely burnt out teachers who left the profession ( especially in New York City schools , in Chicago schools , in Detroit schools ) .
To be sure , the Providence public school system should make the TOP TEN in " ABJECT ".
What really does surprise me is that modern computer technology - once the dream of popular science writer Isaac Asimov for SELF-EDUCATION- is not competently and creatively used to get kids actually EXCITED about learning . Famous Astronomer Carl Sagan observed that kids are naturally curious , almost natural born scientists , until the age of 10 or 11. When I was that age WE were stimulated by the buzz and national anxiety of the 1957 Russian Sputnik. The message : " WE NEED MORE SCIENTISTS ! " .
Computers now make PERSONAL educational goals as reasonable as old national goals.
There is just no need for public education to be a boring torture for millions of working class kids . They can learn quickly that KNOWLEDGE IS POWER immediately ! That is what MOTIVATES !

As a democratic socialist I find it ironic that Brett Smiley is goated by Republican opponents as representing those ELITE people ( we socialists call them the American plutocracy .

Early this morning I listened to an NPR radio station here in New England ( 89.7 ) giving voice to the plight of the people of Puerto desperately trying to survive terrible hurricanes, natural disasters, and government corruption with little help from " colonial " ruler USA.
People self-organized ( always the threat of " socialism " here ) just to keep from starving encounter landlord PRIVATE PROPERTY rights with claims on Puerto Rican real estate ( much abandoned , deteriorating old buildings like the former Social Security Center ) Naturally the bourgeois government as Karl Marx pointed out long ago is very fascist minded and ever ready to serve the interests of Corporate America. Clearly in Puerto Rico it is not diabolic " communism " that has caused poverty , starvation, and hopeless depression. It is old fashioned mean spirited, heart of stone American capitalism and imperialism.
Puerto today could easily become the next Cuba 1959 !
