Just WHO would even think of vandalizing Marx's gravesite or desecrating Jewish cemeteries ? Decaying capitalism has produced a vast sub-class of drug addicted, ignorant, often illiterate, nihilistic youth . Historically this " lumpen proletariat are likely to become the storm troopers of blackguard reaction. I am reminded of the movie " Clockwork Orange ". But not even the music of Beethoven can pacify the people of the Abyss.

In " Lust for Life " the troubled artistic genius Vincent Van Gogh explains that " sex lubricates ".
In defense of Smollet : Hollywood is a truly " Hollywood Babylon " : it corrupts everything it touches . I did not watch the Oscars last night and have not enjoyed more than three Hollywood movies in the last 20 years.
I spent the time reading Bronte's " Jane Eyre " - and focused on her would be husband - the monster of Freudian repression, St. John Rivers. The sexual tension is hot but only suggested. Jane's " master " Rochester, 20 year older than her , has the right stuff -BOTH money and sexual magnetism.
We picture Jane Eyre living happily ever after.

Thank you for your invitation. Presently I favor the SEP and the World Socialist Web Site. But at my age ( 71 ) I am wise to remain a " critical supporter " of the generic Left . I am sad to see how a number of my comments have been misconstrued as reactionary " anti-Semitism " -even with numerous positive references to the Jewish Left.
I know how hard it is to respect the democratic ideals of FREE SPEECH and FREE THOUGHT.
When I suggest that you can LEARN even from political enemies I mean it.
I am most impressed with David North's defending the honor of the Russian Revolution and the heroic Old Bolsheviks.
I am NOT connected to any political organization or party. The fragmentation of socialist parties is a century old tragedy.
I am always willing to reconsider any of my views - with the help of cogent arguments.
In my future comments I will just try to say something useful and instructive or inspiring to ANY honest socialist.

Are crypto-Zionists ruining the Socialist Left ?
Perhaps NOBODY here is as sharp as you two in unmasking fascists, racists, and anti-Semites. But is this defamation coming from crypto-Zionists fearing that the generic LEFT is becoming too hard on Apartheid Israel ? What did I ever say here or anywhere else that indicated Nazi sympathies or a perverse desire to harm Jews ?
I VOTE for socialists. I VOTED for SEP presidential candidates in 2016. But I remain an INDEPENDENT socialist not at all like a " CLEAR " in the Church of Scientology.
I suspect that crypto-Zionists are now corrupting the socialist movement -with the blessing of Greater Israel and the Democratic Party.
And how can the obnoxious tone of New Atheism ever evolve into a mass movement ? Fanatical sectarian " socialists " - out of touch with feelings of the masses- pronouncing anathema on all other socialist parties and organizations- could not attract a flock of pigeons in Kennedy Plaza, Providence.
Observing that secular Zionist Jews control the mainstream news media in the United States, control the Democratic Party, the odious FBI, CIA , the shadowy " Deep State " is just a scientific appreciation of objective TRUTH .

Meanwhile in the USA you had the industrialist Henry Ford saying ( in a quite honest tone) that the only people who benefit from war are militarists and money lenders. The fact that Hitler admired Henry Ford did not make Ford a Nazi.
And the legendary pilot Charles Lindberg being demonized as a hard core anti-Semite for voicing traditional American pacifism. Much like Old Joe Kennedy with the United States on the brink of entry into World War II . Crude remarks do not necessarily contain the poison of race hatred.
Too many GREAT writers have also been demonized as incorrigible anti-Semites . I am thinking of H.L. Mencken and H.P. Lovecraft. Neither writer deserves professional obloquy.

Of course it is foolish to disrespect " sacred " patriotic and religious symbols and rituals anywhere at any time.
I just read that some jerks want to make it AGAINST THE LAW for public school teachers to introduce ANY political or religious controversy into the class room. How can kids learn anything that matters then ? What about the school textbooks ? No political or religious views presented there ?
A student might read an American history textbook praising the IDEALISM of President Woodrow Wilson . But what did the Russian Bolsheviks think about him ? I recall that even the famous psychiatrist Sigmund Freud wrote about Wilson as a bloody mental case.

Everywhere in the USA there are grandiose monuments to the famous " Robber Barons " . Nobody vandalizes them - nor should they.
