Just for posterity and seeing that it's been 50 years since I did the illustration, I thought I'd dig up and scan my original artwork and the response letter I received from Steve Heller (the esteemed NYT art director and writer).
I was only 21 when I created this. I clearly recall Auntie Lo reading my letter in the kitchen on Greylock Avenue and scolding me for not following through on this "incredible" career opportunity. But this was also about the time that I met Susan and, well... priorities changed.
But, "I could have been a contender!" LOL!

Now I have no cravings no urge no no mental distress that I cannot drink or anything involving drinking does not bother me at all. The good Lord has truly saved me 🙏🫶. Many people don't believe in God but if you're at the end of your rope and have tried everything down to the lying to your own self that you didn't drink because nobody called you out on it. And you know you can't take it anymore pray faithfully trust me you will be saved. Highly recommend it. You will be saved from the hell us alcoholics live in day in and day out. That’s an interesting observation Ron. One of my last significant (and lucrative) freelance projects was for the “Chinese Welfare Lottery”. My local client who was the project manager for this had to travel often to Beijing. He told me how the streets of Beijing closely resembled Reservoir Avenue in Cranston with McDonalds, Starbucks, Kentucky Fried Chicken places etc. being constructed at high speed everywhere. What he found extremely surprising was how FAT the Chinese people had become. No longer the slim people he had expected. All thanks to American influence!
