Since attention spans are short, I will quote the very last sentence of an article by Peter McAllister ("A Teacher's Perspective on What's Wrong With Our Schools," Winter 2018):
"And our children deserve schools that demonstrate that there are objective moral values whose realization can lead to a successful, productive, and happy life."
Somehow the principle of benevolent authority must be applied to the moral and intellectual chaos of the public schools. The excoriated Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin would agree, I am sure.

Rhode Island Catholic Bishop Thomas J. Tobin has published a book titled "Without a Doubt — Bringing Faith to Life." In "An Open Letter To College Students," he writes: "Scrupulously avoid the evil temptations that are part of society today, temptations that are especially attractive to young people. Avoid addictions — to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, money, work, and the Internet — they are false gods. These addictions are serious distractions to your goals and are loaded with potential problems for you."
Sounds like old-fashioned, sound Catholic moral advice to me. Only the fanatics of "identity politics" will try to vilify the good bishop as one of those right-wing "haters" that Hollywood depicts.
The advice from that old "Baltimore Catechism" can spare a young person a lot of grief and soul-searching repentance later in life.

My pal Dave, age 71, lives on Social Security disability payments and has a problem even with his food budget by the middle of the month.
Last week, I made Dave an Italian tuna fish sandwich with pickled peppers on a fresh hard roll I bought at a nearby bakery in Knightsville.
About two hours later, Dave called me to say he broke a front tooth on the sandwich (through no fault of the bakery).
This was clearly a dental emergency, but Dave told me from his past experience that neither Medicare nor Medicaid suffices to pay for emergency dental care.
Does it make sense to separate dental care from general health care?
