I hesitate to use the word " phony " but I do agree with you in the not so leftist spirit of H.L. Mencken. People ambitious for fame and power get trapped in SELF-IMAGE making.
Even in the work place there is so much role playing and mask wearing . Sooner or later they end up reflecting on life like Leo Tolstoy's Ivan Ilyich ( in " The Death of Ivan Ilyich " ) . I suspect Bernie Sanders & Donald Trump & Elizabeth Warren & Joe Biden are getting there.
Picture an 80 year old lonely, abandoned Donald Trump in a palatial bedroom reading " The Vanity of Human Wishes ". We are all just a moment in time .
