Community College of Rhode Island now offers just dreary job training for the " underclass " ?

Letter: Steve Fodor: Journal should stop reporting the education system's excuses

Public education in the United States in many ways still a blessing for the working class - like public libraries - was flawed from the beginning in that it was designed to serve the ruling capitalist class . The Industrial Revolution needed better educated wage slaves than the torpid peasantry of the Feudal Age. 

What can be more discouraging than the old tracking system still insidiously destroying THE DREAM of most working class kids by the 10th grade ? " And what do YOU want to be when you grow up ? " As if any normal kid would choose to be less than " successful " in the game of life. 

It seems that the Community College of Rhode Island is subordinating its " higher education " to dreary job training for the " underclass " . What if a relatively young student there wants a taste of old fashioned LIBERAL ARTS ? What can be more useful than 

much maligned " cultural literacy " and just learning HOW TO THINK ? Or does our ruling class fear working class kids LEARNING HOW TO THINK to be as dangerous as the old Southern slave master thought Frederick Douglass with his library card ? 

Way back in the late 70s I was able to study Calculus, Technical Physics, Statistics, Radical literature, and Philosophy of Religion at the Warwick campus of CCRI . And conversational Spanish - which made it easier for me to see the humanity in all these Latino immigrants. And reinforced my love for SOCIALIST Cuba !« less
