" The Trouble With Diversity ", by Walter Benn Michaels

Racial tensions simmer on college campuses ( NPR )
For decades now the neo-Democrats- betraying the New Deal principles of Franklin D. Roosevelt-even the vibrant liberalism of the Kennedy brothers- have pursued " identity politics " into its nth dimension. A very illuminating book about this mistaken policy was published ten years ago : " The Trouble With Diversity... How We Learned to Love Identity AND IGNORE INEQUALITY ". Thinks the author Walter Benn Michaels : " multiculturalism is capitalism's best friend ".
His book is about " how liberalism- in its polite, well meaning way- missed the boat on the greatest liberal issue of our time: inequality ".
Bernie Sanders at least is focusing on social inequality . Most socialists agree that racism is rooted in the nature of capitalism. By 1965 Black Muslin Malcolm X was talking anti-capitalism and anti-imperialism. And telling black people here that they should not be brainlessly loyal to the Democratic Party. Good advice for Bernie Sanders too- soon to win the Democratic primary in Rhode Island. Bernie could form a left-wing third party. The rainbow could be its symbol for " a future to hope in .
