I can certainly believe in Luis Palau's observation: " spiritual hunger ". Even when human beings are down and out their very sanity might depend on their feeling that life has MEANING ( Viktor Frankl 's school of psychiatry ) even when it is not very happy. Catholicism -for all its flaws -preached that there was spiritual meaning even in unhappiness and suffering. But Pope Francis says a lot of this human misery is NOT necessary, is connected to the unjust and irrational economic system of capitalism.
TV evangelists like Joel Osteen have no quarrel with capitalism, They tell their credulous flock that Jesus wants them to be rich too.
Let us hope that some intelligent social ideology gets to these spiritually hungry young people before ISIS or other demented groups and cults.
I would not be surprised if Old Europe misses those enduring Cold War enemies- the native communist " fellow travelers " of Red Moscow. Perhaps Czar Putin will have a " conversion ". Let us pray for him !
