An American general, Smedley Butler , confessed to being " a gangster for capitalism " in 1914

Eleven military-intelligence Democrats win US House seats

Of course , " military intelligence " is often an oxymoron . In a wonderfully critical essay on West Point Gore Vidal mentions an American general's ( Smedley Butler ) " most devastating attack on American capitalism " :
" In short I was a racketeer , a gangster for capitalism .... Like all members of the military profession I never had an original thought until I left the service... I helped make Mexico- and especially Tampico- safe for American oil interests in 1914. I decided to make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in... "
Later General Butler declined an invitation to join a " Liberty League " conspiracy " to help them remove President Roosevelt " ( 1933 ).
Do college students in the USA today read this stuff ? DECONSTRUCTION should also apply to national " patriotic " myths .
