Let us not pretend that the Ukraine is suddenly a dear NATO ally . Does not Russia have an equivalent of the Monroe Doctrine ? Consider this note on our war with Mexico around 1848 :

How hypocritical is U.S. condemnation of Russian actions in the Ukraine. No working class Americans lose any sleep over this far away border dispute involving thousands of Russian nationals.
