" The fact that such a devastating event could take place in modern America speaks to the immense social crisis of contemporary capitalism, which subordinates all aspects of social life to the pursuit of private profit "
And many more will be homeless when the great burning " Camp Fire " is over. And subordinating " all aspects of social life to the pursuit of private profit " is exactly why nothing much has changed for homeless Americans since ( I recall ) the very beginning of the Reagan era.
Almost daily I observe Jack London's " People of the Abyss " in Kennedy Plaza , Providence, Rhode Island, precious human beings rendered sickly and nearly brainless - and hopeless - by extreme destitution. They daily look up at an abandoned tall building called the Superman Building .
