A racist mentality in the Providence Police Dept. -if deeply rooted- is not checked by the abrupt firing of 21 year veteran David Marchant. So many decent enough professionals have lost their jobs over politically incorrect-and STUPID- WORDS, that this punitive trend might be feeding racist hostility. A reprimand would suffice here. Public school teachers have also lost their jobs for foolish and insensitive WORDS in stressful moments of their day.
As a democratic Socialist I do not idealize these guardians of capitalist private property. But it is also foolish to over-vilify them.
The cop should write a written apology to the black officer-and get his job back. Professional incompetence or corruption is much more serious than public crudity.
Bad manners is usually self-punishing. And real malice toward any racial or ethnic group will not be hidden for 21 years.
