But I question the axiom that better educational opportunities for " underprivileged " races and ethnic groups is the key to upward mass mobility.
There is a funny line in the movie " West Side Story " where a delinquent gang member claims : " We are depraved because we are deprived ! ".
In a capitalist society jobs do not magically appear just because the young people are suddenly better educated . In the past trade schools prepared working class kids for already existing job opportunities. Today no young person can be sure of a job even when he or she goes into debt to be " educated ".
The real barrier to full employment is FOR PROFIT industry. Today even highly trained nurses and mental health workers lose their jobs.
Education does not nullify the economic insecurity of capitalism.
And today old fashioned LIBERAL education is being maligned. And LIBERAL education frees people from all sorts of prejudice and ignorance.
How many college graduates today are serious critics of this society ?
