I have been observing homeless people in Providence, Rhode Island for
years now. I made the point in a number of published letters in the
Providence Journal that the homeless, who cluster in the Kennedy Plaza
area, are mostly neglected mentally ill. Who can be more helpless than
they ? I called it " America's moral catastrophe " and a " crime against
humanity ".
Oddly enough, I am presently in daily contact with a homeless 67 year old friend I refer to as " Ragged Dave " in a letter ( just descriptive ). He is living in an old Lincoln Town Car . But last night he was staying at a rather seedy -and notorious- Motel 6 . His vagabond life style makes it difficult for him to even apply for public housing, his only hope, I told him.
A Jewish charity paid for three nights at Motel 6 for 67 year old " Ragged Dave ". Tonight he will be living in that stinking, messy car again.
On SSI " Ragged Dave " had job interviews recently: for selling houses and selling cars !
I can let him take a shower at my cramped studio apartment in Cranston. And wish him GOOD LUCK !
By the way , " Ragged Dave " helped put the Socialist Workers Party on the ballot in Rhode Island in 1976.
