Although I am a baby boomer I am still aware of the power of sex in
the life of any normal individual and read this woman's very credible
story with keen interest.
Some friends of mine have described their " swinging " sexual adventures with no guilty conscience. But they have not tempted me to abandon my monk like existence. I recall the poem of Lucretius : " On the Nature of Things ". The ancient Roman philosopher was a scientific " materialist ". He believed only in the laws of nature and did not " fear the gods ".
Oddly enough, Lucretius had a negative view of human sexuality: The sooner a thinking man got over this mind weakening passion the better.
But the Roman " love poet " Ovid was more human. At the height of the Roman Empire he was telling proud Roman citizens to " make love not war ".
Don't let legal marriage get in the way of the pure joy of life.
Exiled by the emperor Augustus for subverting Roman family life, Ovid died a sad and repentant old man.
How best to live with the contradictions of " free love " ?

Must legal marriage kill the joy of life ? |
