Lovecraft grave stone in Swan Point Cemetery |
Father Sfortunato says daily Mass in this abandoned monastery Howard Phillips Lovecraft — 'That is not dead which can eternal lie,And with strange aeons even death may die.'.' |
[ PROVIDENCE, R.I., Aug. 5.--Vandals entered Swan Point Cemetery last night and overturned over 30 gravestones in the part of the grounds near the river breaking a few of them. ]
Steve, my nephew Nicky and I- privately investigating the H.P. Lovecraft frustrated grave robbery- might have been on to something WEIRD indeed yesterday viewing the Night of the Living Dead scene at Swan Point Cemetery-not far from the grave stone with the " I Am Providence " inscription.
Nicky's FEAR INSTINCT to quickly put his car in reverse at that " dead end " road was influenced, I suspect , by his unconscious memory of a creepy movie titled : Sometimes They Come Back . Nicky had watched it on TV with me way back on Halloween night1999 when he was only a 12 year old boy . Nicky said that it was just as scary as Carnival of Souls.
The three zombie- like creeps at the very edge of that river -I now recall- had a slimy rotten look and they were also drenched in the putrid waters of the Providence River.
Earlier in the day of the strange sudden " storm burst with odd spins ups and vortices " that uprooted 100 year old trees in the Cranston -Providence area, the sky was reported to be a hellish yellowish green color. Something demonic had been let loose in the world, I felt.
I am recovering from my initial panic and confusion over this horror . A more coherent story will emerge from my scattered notes. Did the unholy three " emerge " from that evil looking river ? Or did they, in fact , dwell in it ? There in its murkiest spot must lurk their leader Azathoth , the Blind Idiot God ( I have been studying an unpublished Lovecraft manuscript at the Providence Athenaeum ) .
Azathoth's undead minions are instructed to vandalize any " Church of Lazarus " ( not clear ) . But recently the fine marble altar of the Church of the Holy Rosary in the Fox Point Portuguese ethnic neighborhood (adjacent to Providence's East Side) was smashed to pieces . And the statue of " The Queen of Heaven " was obscenely painted over. And the vandal described himself on the Church wall -in ancient Latin - as disciple of Dagon " who rules the darkness under the rivers and the sea." Dagon was the hideous foul smelling Fish God of the Philistines. The fish symbol itself was adopted by the early persecuted Christians during the reign of the terrible Roman emperor Nero. The fish " monster " sculpture below was discovered in the Catacombs under the Holy City.
Dagon vowed to Satan that he would recover THEIR kingdom-if only after many centuries. Oddly enough it was the hard core scientific materialist H.P. Lovecraft who fantasized- unbelieving - about this cosmic horror OUT OF TIME , the malevolent OLD ONES , mad with rage- in command of all Damned Possessed Undead from first century AD to the present.
Lovecraft did say that the mere knowledge of these things would drive us all MAD .But Catholic exorcists -sustained by THE FAITH - fear not this abominable and detestable evil and insist : " the power of Christ condemns them ! "
I have resumed correspondence with my old friend and LaSalle Academy classmate Father Ludovico Sfortunato in Rome . He is the Vatican 's magister of occult studies . And Father Ludovico is also a respected Poe scholar . I just read his master degree thesis on Poe's tale The Case of M. Valdemar . This priest scholar Sfortunato believes that he has indeed recorded a macabre " voice of one undead " . He too -like a certain Poe character-is a connoisseur of fine Tuscan red wines -with which he celebrates daily Catholic mass in a ruined, abandoned ( since the Great Plague of the 14th century ) some say haunted old monastery.
Father Ludovico once hinted to me that there is a rare Latin language manuscript of Necronomicon in the Vatican Secret Archives. It has that blood chilling incantation against the accursed Azathoth- the Blind Idiot God. I will ask my saintly old friend to translate it for me.
