I have already read quite a few of W. Somerset Maugham's short stories. What is missing in so many contemporary fiction writers is the instinct for a STORY . Maugham delivers these story with pleasing mixture of cynicism and compassion. A lot of the characters move in upper class circles of the old British Empire. But always HUMAN , all too HUMAN ! One of my favorites is titled " Red " - a study of idyllic romantic love turning rancid with passing of TIME . TIME always the great subversive ! For some philosophical wisdom in your later years read Somerset Maugham 's
"The Summing Up "
