Gina Raimondo -now Establishment Joe Biden 's Secretary of Commerce -was the quintessential Wall St. " friend of labor " ( ? ) Rhode Island governor. Listening to Brett Smiley talk about the persistent homeless problem in the state, you can infer they he never thinks outside the box about the fundamental problem and contradictions of the capitalist system -which he no doubt adores as much as Gina Raimondo. But as a long time independent democratic socialist I have always discovered in every hot political controversy SYSTEMIC problems. For example , how can we solve the homeless problems without severely checking landlord-capitalist PRIVATE PROPERTY rights ? How can we have a sane and humane national health care system without abolishing FOR PROFIT hospitals, FOR PROFIT nursing homes, with licensed medical doctors and dentists mostly running a private BUSINESS ? Would any " liberal " , " progressive " Democrat ever tell licensed medical doctors and dentists today that they will no longer be permitted to refuse Medicare or Medicaid patients ? Will Brett Smiley tell the RIPTA management that they have become incompetent and greedy at the top ? Little Rhode Island should have a model public transportation system even within the framework of capitalism. And in Providence all the poor , dysfunctional families - without gushing financial help - will never see a functional public school system. Health experts know that too much lead in the water results in embarrassing IQ test scores. What gets in the way of saving socially doomed poor children in Providence ( or in any other big city ) is FOR PROFIT capitalism. NOTE : There are no " socialists " in the Democratic Party . As a " socialist " Bernie Sanders is really just a joke ! Interesting that Bernie won the 2016 April presidential primary in Rhode Island shocking the Democratic Party establishment . In Rhode Island we have a virtual ONE PARTY SYSTEM - reminds me of Cold War STALINISM ( not democratic socialism ) ." Knock it off ! " shouted Comrade Gina .
