Say since the 1848 war with Mexico which Lincoln protested ? Way back in 1898 American author Mark Twain was protesting American imperialism and war crimes . Dalton Trumbo's " Johnny Got His Gun " protested the lunacy of the First World War - the war to make the world safe for democracy . All that Wilsonian blather about FREEDOM . Recall John Hersey's " Hiroshima ? And Ron Kovic's anti-Vietnam War novel " Born on the Fourth of July " . We just had to stop communism spreading in Asia. Many war crimes-like the bombing of a hospital were reported in Afghanistan . Recall the Abu Ghraib prison torture scandals in Iraq ?
