  1. An essay written way back in the early 70s by American author and democratic socialist Irving Howe is very relevant in explaining the trouble with OUR times . Excerpt from a book review . I just read Howe's brilliant essay " What's the Trouble ? " last night .
[ "This chapter presents Irving Howe's 1971 essay 'What's the Trouble? ' in which he describes the malaise afflicting America's youth as a “crisis of civilization.” Howe highlights social problems that he thinks are symptoms of this crisis, which he believes cannot be dissolved through acts of public policy. For Howe, a social crisis raises difficulties whereas a crisis of civilization raises dilemmas. He also provides a historical background on socialism and classical liberalism before concluding with a discussion of the repercussions of a crisis of civilization and the consequences of the failure of socialism.]
