I do agree that the arrogant and obnoxious New Atheism should not win the soul of young scientists. As an INDEPENDENT democratic socialist I concluded long ago that the biggest mistake of the now defunct Soviet Union was to declare itself " officially atheist ".
Educated Catholics like Mr. Miller should be praised for defending the harmony of Faith and Reason ( as did Catholic theologian Thomas Aquinas ) .
To be sure , most ordinary intelligent human beings will find GOD ( with a hint of the abstract sublime ) easier to accept as ultimate REALITY than the " God Particle " . Dogmatic Marxists have failed to communicate their arid dialectical materialism and their awe of matter-in-motion to the masses for more than a century now. To be sure, they would make THEIR socialism just as dreary !
And sad to say secular humanists today - loyal to the Democrat Party - are not in the vanguard of the defenders of the FREE SPEECH and FREE THOUGHT tradition of Western Civilization.
Defending president George W. Bush's criminal invasion and occupation of Iraq , ex Trotskyist Christopher Hitchens ridiculed ALL religions in his nasty little book titled " God Is Not Great ... how religion poisons everything ".
I am presently reading an old book by the late Preston Cloud : " Cosmos Earth And Man ". It does not poison religion for me . I cannot take physicist Lawrence Krauss too seriously : the amazing " non-miracle " ( ? ) of a complex universe with intelligent life in it ( at least on the Good Earth ) popping out of quantum foam NOTHINGNESS shaming even Botticelli's Venus .
