Christianity in general in the United States -not just the Catholic Church- has been hurt by a false- in reality ILLIBERAL- view of the separation of church and state. Freedom of religion has been attacked from the so called " left ". The New Atheist types would make the United States like the old Stalinist Soviet Union in it odious OFFICIAL atheism. That-not SOCIALISM - was its biggest mistake. 

A Catholic bishop should be able to express ancient church doctrine without being ostracized by the secular saints of political correctness. Many old Catholics suspect that Vatican II left the church with an erratic moral compass. It affected the quality of the priests being ordained. They report priests saying mass trying to act like cool, regular guys -who exude as much spirituality as Saturday Night Live. They think the Catholic Church should be LESS political and more mystical. 

If you read pre-Vatican II publications , you get the impression of many fine intellects and genuine scholars connected to the Catholic Church- not saints but a cut above " father " as a REGULAR GUY. 

Perhaps the best way for today's priests to stay " holy " is to be as UNWORLDLY as first century Christians in the Roman Empire. That example will attract all the lost sheep with souls drying up in this capitalist wasteland - as degenerate as the imagination of Caligula. DOMINUS VOBISCUM !
