As a lifelong democratic socialist I was convinced that Marx and Engels were right about capitalist exploitation and oppression. I still think the labor theory of value which Marx elaborated in DAS KAPITAL is as cogent as any proof in Euclid's Geometry.
However the Soviet Union was wrong headed in making Russia an officially atheist state . That turned off many deeply Catholic countries of Europe and even the America of Sinclair Lewis' " Elmer Gantry " .
What a joke is " OUR democracy " in capitalist America. Decaying capitalism needs a foreign enemy . And the American plutocracy has designated now POST-COMMUNIST Russia as still the arch -enemy of FREEDOM on the planet. These patriotic crackpots are prepared to risk nuclear World War III over a SOVEREIGN Ukraine ! And with so much stale Wilsonian babble that was FALSE more than a hundred years ago in that GREAT WAR to " make the world safe for democracy ".

One perhaps long forgotten science scholar, J.D. Bernal writes , in his book " Science In History " :
" Marx thus demonstrated that capitalism ,far from being a system of natural justice as the classical economists maintained, was one of extortion imposed by arbitrary force. It was the central concept of EXPLOITATION ,which the economists had hidden from themselves , that was to give the explosive force to Marx's teaching ".
.... " It was not that workers and peasants had not felt exploited for centuries, it was rather that now they could understand the mechanism through which the exploitation was carried on ".
" The implications of Marxism were so repugnant to the ruling bourgeoisie of the time that it is not surprising that for another fifty years all over the world , and until today in a large part of it , they were ignored and rejected by the official exponents of social science . "
