Many years after his assassination in Mexico 1940 Leon Trotsky remains an unsullied revolutionary character. None of his voluminous writing suggest that he ever had a personal agenda apart from world socialist revolution. Even his Jewish background did not influence his thinking about toxic " petty bourgeois " patriotism and crackpot imperialist nation states . He would probably have a very negative -but balanced -view of Zionism today .
If he was condemned by middle class moralists as the " Red Army Butcher ", he could defend himself by explaining the morality of a little something called the INTERNATIONAL CLASS STRUGGLE.
Trotsky also wrote extensively on the errors of " individual terrorism " . Read his essays " Their Morals and Ours " and " Against Individual Terrorism ". Trotsky's " The Revolution Betrayed " is must reading for any politically literate socialist .
It does seem to this INDEPENDENT democratic socialist that Marxist theory entered a long period of pathetic stagnation after Leon Trotsky's death. Just about ALL of the Marxist vanguard parties still around have degenerated into grotesque personality cults- actually a force for LEFT totalitarianism. Self-confident parties are not afraid of democratic debate , of the FREE SPEECH , FREE THOUGHT tradition of Western Civilization.
Still one agrees with George Orwell's character in " 1984 " : Winston Smith enters this THOUGHT CRIME into his not so secret diary :
" IF THERE IS HOPE IT LIES IN THE PROLES ! "
