In a way the HISTORY of science is the best way for the non-scientist to understand science. Often even brilliant individuals can be brilliantly wrong - as Aristotle so often was. Newton was both right and wrong about the nature of light. It seems that Einstein simply lacked enough information ( on atomic forces ) to formulate any credible " unified field theory ". But in his popular book " The Evolution of Physics " he is a good and congenial explainer.
