I still wear Dorene Rousseau's gift ring . She passed away almost five years ago- April 15 , 2017 . My sister Adrienne and I frequently visit the gravesite in nearby St. Ann's Cemetery in Cranston . A name on Dorene's stone is HELEN WORDEN , 1933- . Helen, Dorene's close-friend cousin, was just released from the Elmhurst Center in Providence after being treated for COVID-19 pneumonia . Helen called me last night to say she was back home at her Marvin Gardens Apartment in Providence not far from where our Grandma Ruggieri lived on Federal Hill ( 62 Gesler Street ) .
" There is no place like home! " sighed 89 year old Helen . By the way , Helen is perhaps the oldest Elvis Presley fan in Rhode Island . Even her generous gift checks at Christmas have an " Elvis " design on them.
Above all now Helen wants to stay INDEPENDENT . God bless her. She is a tough, old fashioned , Polish Catholic lady. She is a true animal lover . And misses her cat named " George Elvis ".
Helen told me there one Elvis song which she cannot bear to hear " : a sentimental ballad about a beloved dog named " Shep " who had to be put to sleep :
" Old Shep, he has gone where the good doggies go
And no more with old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven there's one thing I know
Old Shep has a wonderful home ".
People who love dogs invariably respect ALL people too.
Helen told me over the phone : " My father said " never forget Helen that all people are EQUAL . ALL PEOPLE EQUAL ! ".

I called my old friend Helen Worden last night. She who sends me these Elvis Presley checks at Christmas time. She was crying and heartbroken. Because she finally had to give up her beloved cat name George Elvis. Elvis is now at the Elbow Street Shelter in Providence Rhode Island. Hoping to be adopted by a kind cat lover.
