 There are many helpful books on coping with alcoholism. One I just read had a forward by Patrick Kennedy. A funny personal anecdote about " Rubbers " - who does look like a perfect gentleman. My family lived in Cranston more than 20 years ago. My father's name was Domenic. A similar  Italian sur- name. After the " Rubbers " comedy we would get crank calls from jerks thinking that this was his residence. Once I took the call : " My mother had NINE kids! She wished Pop was the condom thief ! " Then I hung up.
