I just read a news item about a brain dead man some
" right to life " state health official wanted kept alive - though
" unable to eat, care for himself or communicate ".
Before a car accident that ruptured his aorta, Hugh Finn
must have had excellent communication skills. He had been a
Louisville, Ky. , television news anchor. He might have even
covered unpleasant, morbid stories like this.
In a macabre Edgar Allen Poe story a dying man, M. Valdemar,
is hypnotized at the point of death. Finally he groans out this
request : " Please let me die ! "
If there was a single thought left in the oxygen starved
brain of Hugh Finn, it would be the same as Mr. M. Valdemar .
But meddling Virginia state attorneys " pondered ways to
keep the tube (Finn's ) in place without the family's blessing."
Even though Virginia law recognizes a hopeless vegetative
state!
The ethical question of keeping the brain dead alive
is literally - for minds uncorrupted by religious rubbish - A
NO BRAINER !
RIP Hugh Finn and many others like him .
