We cannot underestimate the significance of WRITING in
general for the development of Civilization. And it was an advance
for the idea of JUSTICE and the idea of DEMOCRACY when human beings
perceived the importance of written laws. When fighting tyrants what
better ideological weapon could the common people have than these words :
" No man is above the law ! " ?
But like everything else on this sinful planet things have a
perverse way of becoming the opposite of their original intent.
Today in our democratic country a clever lawyer can use his understanding
of the " letter of the law " to subvert democratic concepts of justice.
We see this happening too often : the letter of law opposes
the democratic feelings of the people.
Should the letter of the law be used to veto a democratic decision
such as the election of the president of the United States ?
Many Republican leaders who babble frequently about " obstruction "
of justice themselves obstruct JUSTICE every day in office - as the
impoverished half of this nation perceives it.
Do they take seriously Amnesty International's recent condemnation
of our criminal justice system ?
It seems that many of our prisoners have been treated as if they
were beneath the law !
And George Orwell warned us long ago that obscurantist language
- the letter of the law - often masks undemocratic purposes .
" We shall meet in a place where there is no darkness ".
