If this were a creative time for American literature, some gifted writer would give us the modern version of French writer F. Celine's " Journey to the End of the Night ". Leon Trotsky wrote an interesting and perceptive review of this black mood novel.

At the END OF THE NIGHT one will find the pristine vision of the early Christians if not quite Saint Augustine's " City of God " . Augustine wrote in the very midst of the Fall of the Roman Empire .
Social sanity is not beyond the capacity of the human race .
