Homelessness is a PUBLIC HEALTH HAZARD

Discussion on World Socialist Web Site

Hepatitis A outbreak worsens in West Virginia, Kentucky

It would be foolish to ignore certain FACTS connected with the homeless population in the United States. The SOCIALIST solution to the homeless problem is, of course, to quickly find DECENT homes for homeless people -not to smear them as a public nuisance.

A man who defecates in his pants on a public bus and having dirty hands stained with fecal matter , touches door knobs and table surfaces in a fast food restaurant and then coughing with a suspicious cough - redolent of the old tuberculosis wards - boards a crowded, unventilated RIPTA bus IS indeed a public health hazard . He needs immediate attention AND a decent place to live.

My friend did experience the unpleasantness of living in his car for a while . One night he opted to stay at the notorious Harrington Hall in Cranston, R,I. He described it as a nightmare of overcrowding and unsanitary conditions. I notified the Rhode Island Public Health Dept. but they never responded.

Harrington Hall was in the news recently not for bad conditions there but because the Cranston neighborhood is alarmed that too many homeless registered child molesters are sheltered there.
Naturally my friend - OK, not homeless now- said he would rather live and die in his old Lincoln Town Car.
