On Veterans Day I read this innocent looking headline: "Richmond church bestows blessing of quiet recognition on veterans" ( Providence Journal, Nov. 10). Yet I recall hearing on WPRO Talk Radio a new controversy about a Catholic poll worker being fired for saying "God bless you!" to individuals about to cast their vote.
In general, I loathe most forms of "political correctness" from a left-socialist point of view which emphasizes the Class Struggle even in local politics. Socialists are not impressed with with petty-bourgeois political causes which ignore more fundamental social and economic inequality. Why should we be impressed with a gay male or a lesbian female who becomes the chief executive of General Motors? They are still CLASS enemies!
But a passing thought on this Richmond church honoring war veterans: does THIS not violate the spirit of separation of church and state? It would make more sense for a Christian church to honor pacifists who take seriously God's commandment: "Thou shalt not kill".
We best honor ALL veterans by protesting imperialist wars!
