After he got married and had a daughter and mortgaged a house and
turned 30 and got fatter, Alfonse La Chance also got a lot more
ambitious -and a lot less scrupulous.
He was finally beginning to come up in the company and had a
number of mentors who saw Alfonse as a younger, more idealistic version
of themselves.
Alfonse showed his respect for the work ethic by leaving the job
early often only to take his nagging " material girl " wife shopping.
" Anything her sweet heart desired, nothing was good enough for Debbie
Dearest.", he thought to himself.
Alfonse " work ethic " was only on paper- often 100 hours a week
but always paid for by the company payroll. It was easy to balance the
books: other blue collar workers- not on their way up - got cheated-
many of them and often, a little here and a little there.
One weekend -showing his dedication - Alfonse attended a seminar
a managerial prerogatives . He learned how to fire shiftless employees
without feeling any pangs of conscience. He read passages from " The
Virtue of Selfishness" and " Looking out for number one ".
When the company was suddenly sold - a complete surprise to Alfonse-
he himself was fired . Not only fired but he now faced prosecution.
His material girl Debbie Dearest kicked him out of the house .
When I encountered him on a park bench, he was living with his
elderly mother. I read the title of the book he was reading : " When
Bad Things Happen to Good People ".
