I just finished reading this sultry ( for its time ) novel by Somerset Maugham. The old themes here of one sided love, smoldering sexual passion, marital mismatch. Perhaps sexuality in human beings will always border on tragedy . What would Dr. Sigmund Freud think of Mrs. Craddock ? Aware of her own voluptuous beauty , she wanted a man would literally sacrifice his soul for HER . She would WORSHIP him . And he would be HER MASTER ! Not quite third wave feminism in the USA today.
