Sociologists like Ashley Montague interested in American culture have commented on the contempt for the human body's basic functions here. Evidence for this for Montague was an astonishing dearth of public rest rooms for visitors or just walkers in any American city. Could our obesity problem be connected to our public restroom neurosis ? Whenever I walk in that horrid alley beside the Superman Building in downtown Providence I think of those convenient European " pissoirs ". The lingering smell there of stale beer and derelict piss .
