What this woman experienced growing up in the old Stalinist Soviet Union was NOT democratic socialism. The best explanation for the revolutionary degeneration of the USSR was given by Leon Trotsky - assassinated by Stalin's agents in Mexico in 1940 : " The Revolutionary Betrayed ". Still even as an IDEA socialism is anathema in capitalist America not in the minds of WE THE PEOPLE but in the minds of the ruling class.
Alas, the collapse of STALINIST Russia did not breed fervent Trotskyists. It mass produced a bitter pro-capitalist , would be ELITE. President Vladimir Putin represents what Trotsky would have seen as the last stage of corrupt Soviet bureaucracy : the transformation into a now CAPITALIST Russian ruling class.
Despite right wing paranoia no leader of the Democratic Party -not Bernie Sanders , not AOC - is a serious or even a politically literate socialist or communist. The very idea of nationalizing the banking industry - FINE with real socialists ! - is alien to their pseudo-progressive agenda.
