My dear woman companion , Dorene R . was sadly failing rapidly after the bone cancer spread to her liver. Without being " trained " our precious pet dogs " Dottie " and " Mindy " -like guardian angels -comforted Dorene in her last days. Both cute little lap dogs, " Mindy " would sleep in the bed by Dorene's shoulder and " Dottie " at her feet .
It broke Dorene's heart to give up " our girls " at the Providence Animal Shelter on Elbow St. in the last month of her life. At Hope Hospice Center in Providence I placed a picture of " Dottie " and " Mindy " by her bedside and once again assured Dorene that she had given her guardian angels " the gift of life " . They had already been adopted - together. Which pleased us both.
The problem is " our girls " are no longer around to comfort me. The pet adoption process makes it very difficult just to check on a beloved pet tearfully given up for adoption at the Elbow St. Animal Shelter.
Love for animals or people should not involve an insensitive possessiveness. As if a beloved dog - with new loving family - will have a neurotic breakdown upon reuniting with an old friend .
