What is the point of living over 70 or so, if most of us won't be able to work and we will need someone else to take care of us?
I once heard an elderly man give an answer to this question that has stayed with me ever since.
Someone asked him, What's the point of living after 70 if you can't work anymore and you might have to be taken care of? He smiled and said,
Do you think my purpose in life is to make money? He went on to say,
When I was in my twenties my purpose was to make a career. When I was in my forties my purpose was to have children. Now my purpose is different. I tell my grandchildren stories so they can know the lessons I've learned. I teach them and give them advice so they know what is truly important in life.
This response made me think.
Often times we base the value of a person on how much they contribute to society.
If we saw a baby we wouldn't say "that's a waste of resources" would we? We wouldn't say that parents who are forced to retire have no value would we? Just because a person cannot work does not mean their existence is pointless.
People who are over the age of 70 often continue to contribute to their families by doing many things. They might volunteer their time, mentor younger people, take care of their grandchildren or be there for their friends. Studies have shown that people who have strong social ties and a sense of worth after retiring are happier and healthier.
Sure as you get older you will need to rely on others more often.
However, just because you need to be taken care of doesn't mean you have no value. Sometimes the most important gifts come not in what people do but in what they teach us and leave for us.

I use the Cranston Public Library very frequently. All my life I have been a big fan of THE PUBLIC LIBRARY . I appreciate both printed BOOKS , MAGAZINES ,NEWSPAPERS and the fairly new information technology including dozens of computers available to library patrons. I would vote in ANY election for an increase in library funding.
For years it was taken for granted by both library patrons and library staff that- conducive to studying and reading -QUIET and CIVILITY were the norm; indeed THE RULE, in public libraries.
For some time now I have been perturbed by this unexplained , un-therapeutic, and RUDE to the general public DUMPING BUS LOADS OF MENTALLY DISTURNED YOUTH into the Cranston Public Library. Presently I am typing at a computer station here and seated to my left is a clearly mentally disturbed youth. Only the STATE OF RHODE ISLAND can be authorizing this unprofessional " treatment " of difficult minors.
NOTE : The Cranston Public Library could at least give notice to regular patrons for " patience " with this " problem ". Some of us might just think that " brats " are the problem here. Like the homeless crisis ,the real problem here is the STATE of Rhode Island ( or perhaps the City of Cranston ? ) neglecting vulnerable people.

I think that’s the saddest question I’ve ever seen here. You say you’ll die “soon”, so I don’t know if you’re using “soon” because you’ve lived about 2/3s or 3/4s of your life, or because you have a terminal disease and have only months to live. I’m going to address the question first as if you’re just worried about dying in general, and later I’ll talk about if you have been given weeks, months, or years to live.
If you’re currently in decent health, you could live another 30 years. Do you want to spend 30 more years doing what you are now? The first thing I would suggest is that you start living! You’re wasting away what years you DO have left.
I’m 73 and don’t even think about dying. I’m in a community with lots of friends, do water aerobics every day, go to Happy Hour with my two BFFs once a week, travel when I can, volunteer, ride my bike, read, write, take watercolor painting classes AND take care of my 84-year-old husband, who, with congenital heart disease, very well may not live more than a few more years. But even he spends more time “doing” than worrying about it.
To get the mental peace you’re looking for, don’t spend every day thinking about dying and crying over it, spend every day doing something you love to do. If you can’t think of anything you love, go looking for it!
Take a class in something you’ve always wanted to try.
Go somewhere you’ve never been, even if it’s in your own town or state.
Volunteer somewhere.
Find some physical activity you enjoy, even if it’s just walking or swimming.
Read about places you’ve never visited.
Research a topic you’ve been interested in.
Make friends. Join a church or a club if you need to meet new people. ]

Why is there an epidemic of unripe or quickly turned rotten " fresh fruit" in so many grocery stores in Rhode Island? As a kid growing up in the early 1950s in Valley View Housing Project, Providence I have Proustian memories of my then young father coming home with juicy reddish purple plumbs. Even tomatoes are rarely sold juicy ripe red around here. Nor can they be found in Subway grinders.
