My pal Dave, age 71, lives on Social Security disability payments and has a problem even with his food budget by the middle of the month.

Last week, I made Dave an Italian tuna fish sandwich with pickled peppers on a fresh hard roll I bought at a nearby bakery in Knightsville.

About two hours later, Dave called me to say he broke a front tooth on the sandwich (through no fault of the bakery).

This was clearly a dental emergency, but Dave told me from his past experience that neither Medicare nor Medicaid suffices to pay for emergency dental care.

Does it make sense to separate dental care from general health care?

How many senior citizens are neglected in these dental-care emergencies?

But why does the state have a problem finding housing even for the homeless elderly here ? I have a friend named David Nelson , age 73 , living on Social Security Disability with both Medicare and Medicaid . Why should this man be homeless for any length of time ? Presently he does not even have a car to live in. Born David Gold from a Jewish background, he has received some help from Jewish social service charities. He has been in communication with local rabbis, one living in the Brown University area ( Y Laufer, 362 Hope St. ) Ironically his Aunt Gracie Alpert left a legacy for brain research to the Brown Medical School ( named after the Alpert family ) . Dave has a half brother named Sam Gold , a Miami lawyer, who will be sending him some financial assistance by the end of this month. His son, Dean Gold , now living in Chicago , is upset that he just cannot prevent his father from being homeless in Rhode Island. My old friend Dave Nelson IS on the brink of a personal meltdown. He had to cancel a visit to his primary care physician in Boston early this morning. He also spilled hair dye ( ? ) over his 15 bottles of prescription medicine kept in a now ragged black bag . Everywhere he went he took this " medicine bag " with him. So PRECIOUS was it ! What looked like " JUNKIE NEEDLES " he spilled all over my studio apartment floor. But in fact they were just special TOOTH PICKS in small plastic tubes. How many guys living on Social Security Disability insist on prescription toothpaste and strictly organic food from WHOLE FOODS ? How many guys drive a car while flossing their teeth ? How many guys drive a car with a SUSPENDED LICENSE while flossing their teeth ? How can guys wear dark sunglasses at twilight while driving a RENTED car with a SUSPENDED drivers license for fear of eye cancer and BLINDNESS ? How many guys spent their last 100,000 dollars on a lawyer after seriously injuring a person on a motorcycle while driving ( unintentionally ) on soporific prescription medicine ?

The Old Catholic in me says Dave is paying for the SINS of a lifetime . But he should not be HOMELESS now ! Even his two ex wives, three estranged sons, and a long time girl friend in Seattle , a public school teacher. Even long dead " Aunt Gracie " ( Alpert )- no friend of Dave or Dave's mother , Gracie's sister - would not want that .

I have visited the NEW & IMPROVED Providence Public Library twice this week. Very big improvements . I hope this underused city treasure gets all the funds it deserves . I was , however , disappointed to learn that they have abolished ( ? ) the REFERENCE DEPARTMENT . What is a respectable public library without its REFERENCE DEPARTMENT and wonderful, helpful REFERENCE LIBRARIAN ?

True ,in the past homeless denizens of Kennedy Plaza might camp inside the REFERENCE ROOM for the day in unscholarly torpor. Can't SOCIAL WORKERS be alerted to that problem ?

Also, the Providence Public Library would benefit from a FREE , spacious ,public parking lot . At least as big and convenient as that of the Warwick Public Library .

The clean WALK-IN new restrooms at the Providence Public Library are preferable to the old and seedy one person restrooms where any junkie might attend to his or her habit beyond normal body functions.

Ear plugs should be provided for serious students at the library who are distracted by the neglected mentally ill talking to themselves or screaming at invisible antagonists .

But somehow CIVILIZATION survives !

Friend or Foe? Marxism and the Police

[ Political events regularly tend to bring the question of the role of the police in society to the fore. In the period heading up to the September 11 attack, a rash of police brutality cases throughout the world had created a situation where many important cities where rocked by protests against general police violence or individual rogue cops. Since then, under a heavy barrage of bourgeois patriotic propaganda, police have been literally promoted as self-sacrificing defenders of civilisation and every poor orphan and grandmother on the planet. Liberal and even radical "copwatch" activity is at low ebb; ironically perhaps nowhere more than in New York City, previously the site of a good number of large police violence protests. ⁽¹⁾ Open pro-police propaganda is having a real effect.

That the role of police is regularly brought to the centre of things is testimony to the crucial and apparently contradictory role they play in this society. Within the line of their work, they accomplish some seemingly positive things. For example, they may break up fights, arrest insane serial killers and if we are to believe modern televised mythology, help fragile old people cross hazardous city street corners. Then again, any striking worker that has had to deal with them knows they always defend the bosses interests, anybody who has any knowledge of the judicial system knows that they literally all lie under oath and anybody who was brought up in a poor working class neighbourhood has witnessed or experienced their abuse. Of course capitalists, politicians and media propagandists refer only to the former activities to actively promote the police in any way they can. Copwatch liberals and other critical apologists for the police will generally dismiss the latter activities and denounce "isolated cases", rogue cops and call for community control commissions or enquiries on individual incidents.

Both of these analyses are of absolutely no help in identifying what is the role of the police in this society and thus what attitude the working class and revolutionaries must adopt towards them. The question is not professionalism or abuse. The issue is not "good cop versus bad cop". This is an attempt to whitewash the role of police in society based solely on emotional and moralistic definitions. Trying to understand a political institution by analysing one person at a time is like trying to understand the geology of a sector by analysing a few grains of sand or a few shovels of dung. There can of course be nice individuals that happen to be cops. They might even be agreeable neighbours or relatives. But that is totally irrelevant. ]
