There is a FASCIST solution to lumpen-proletariat crime and all forms of anti-social , " illegitimate " behavior and there is a democratic socialist solution. Ironically, both involve " authoritarian " state measures. Homelessness, for example , is clearly a public health hazard and certainly detrimental to the mental and physical health of unfortunate homeless persons. In all bourgeois democratic countries the criminal class. is a dead weight on the working class and the lower middle class. The offspring of this " declassed " class have made public education in " OUR democracy " nearly dysfunctional . There are whole shelves of published books in our public libraries written by burnt out and disillusioned public school teachers. In combating these FASCIST solutions to THE PROBEM the democratic LEFT should not pretend to be oblivious of THE PROBLEM. Can criminal types be reformed by " kindness " ? Well, sadism and meanness does not help ! Do already vicious pit-bull dogs respond to kindness ? Do rats and snakes and crocodiles ? It does seem that incurable criminal types must be removed from society until some " miracle " of redemption happens .
