8 views May 31, 2023 Returning to my apartment in Knightsville Cranston, I spotted a maimed squirrel struggling in a death agony ( perhaps it was hit by a car ) to get to a safe place ( to die ? ) . " Poor thing ! " I thought. Even if it had just a broken leg I knew it would be fatal in the Darwinian sense. Thinking it now DEAD , I made this video of " Rufus " . I wanted to give the doomed creature a name. A little horror - like a corpse suddenly reviving in a morgue , "Rufus " -briefly - came back . " Sometimes they come back ". But after just seconds " Rufus " gave up the ghost ( Well it must FEEL LIKE SOMETHING to be a dying squirrel ! ) . When I go down that road again I expect to see a very dead " Rufus " . I wonder if a creature's life has any higher meaning other than " I was alive and now I am dead " ? How about my own ? Witnessing the cruelty of the STRUGGLE FOR EXISTENCE - and not being able to go beyond SCIENCE here- Charles Darwin feared for " THE FAITH " and morbidly thought himself a " murderer " for publishing his " Origin of the Species " . RIP " RUFUS " . You gave this HUMAN creature a moment of PITY for ALL doomed creatures. Perhaps there is something transcendent about the FEELING ?
