To a degree incipient mental illness can be checked by knowledge. All these violent crackups might have been " saved " just by understanding a simple truth : We live in a SICK capitalist society that encourages rage and self-hatred in the too many " losers " ( Trump's favorite word ). Malcolm X was so right in speaking to those Harlem crowds of oppressed black people , telling them to love and respect themselves. Only then could they respect their brothers and sisters- and find the inner strength to get though life without booze and narcotics and mindless forms of law breaking. The extreme alienation of capitalist society is mass producing " insanity " in troubled souls. And American psychiatry is corrupt and useless and promotes only " adjustment " to the rotten status quo- or instructs on the most effective way to torture prisoners of war. Not much " therapy " in the American Gulag too. What a mess !
