American Catholics have been familiar with the Elmer Gantry type fundamentalist preacher since Sinclair Lewis wrote the famous novel and charismatic actor Burt Lancaster starred in the Hollywood movie. But the early 20th century intellectual bashers of corrupted Christianity -like Sinclair Lewis (who also wrote " It Can't Happen Here " - a warning of lurking American fascism ) were invariably left wing critics of the capitalist system, American imperialism , pacifists , socialists , communists ( like author of " American Tragedy " Theodore Dreiser ) . Not so our New Atheism Cult New Hate group evangelists . THEY definitely have a right wing political agenda ( their guiding light Christopher Hitchens was dripping with it ) . Most CHRISTIAN Americans are not CHRISTIAN Zionists foaming at the mouth for APOCALYPSE NOW and nuclear World War III . The nearly universal belief in God and organized religion are in no way responsible for the social evil destroying human civilization today.
