Reading his book on the death of liberalism I can see how Chris Hedges was influenced by Marx but he is hardly " closet Marxist ". Chris would be quickly BANNED by any Marxist sect still around today.
As an INDEPENDENT democratic socialist I have been influenced by Catholic social philosophy , the thinking of Albert Camus , Irving Howe , Erich Fromm , even Eric Hoffer ( " The True Believer " ) , H.L. Mencken , and the letters of legendary horror writer H.P. Lovecraft , the 1950s Beats .
I recall Chris Hedges putting in a good word for the famous Catholic radical Dorothy Day.
My favorite Trotsky in Exile quote : " The truth is an orphan ".
