Catholic saint " Mother Cabrini " declared the " Patron Saint of Immigrants "
[Mother Cabrini, an Italian immigrant, became the first American citizen canonized as a Catholic saint, founding 67 institutions (schools, hospitals, orphanages) for poor immigrants worldwide, notably serving Italians in NYC slums, and became the Patron Saint of Immigrants for her tireless advocacy for the marginalized. Her life exemplified deep spirituality, perseverance against opposition, and a commitment to education, healthcare, and dignity for the forgotten, establishing a legacy in the US, Europe, and Latin America.
Born in Italy, Mother Cabrini arrived in New York City in 1889 with a missionary vision from the Pope to serve the many poor Italian immigrants, establishing schools and orphanages for them.
Despite her lifelong poor health and fear of water, she crossed the Atlantic 24 times, building 67 institutions, including hospitals like Columbus Hospital in Chicago, across three continents.
She championed the rights and dignity of immigrants, fighting for better conditions and care from church and state, becoming a powerful advocate for the poor and marginalized.
In 1909, she became a naturalized U.S. citizen, further solidifying her connection to the country she served so devotedly, and died in Chicago in 1917.
Canonized in 1946, she was declared the Patron Saint of Immigrants, recognized for her unwavering faith and monumental charitable works that created sanctuaries for the needy. ]
