Bertrand Russell - The day the Great War began

At the very time a much younger me was protesting the Vietnam War ( " Dying for a Colossal Lie " - title of my letter to the editor of the " Providence Journal " circa 1967 ) I read British philosopher Bertrand Russell's account of his amazingly surreal experience as an upper class aristocrat - citizen in Great Britain protesting the insane " Great War " of 1914 , the " war to make the world safe for democracy " . Sadly even today the excuse for war is always very nation-state based . In 2025 WE are led to believe that our president Herr Trump , the top plutocrat of the American plutocracy , is on a higher moral level than " Bad Vlad " Putin , the top oligarch in the Russian oligarchy . None of the politicians in our " progressive " Democratic Party can or will begin to think outside the box of capitalism, American imperialism, and Israeli Zionism. And the mainstream news media in " OUR democracy " imagines that stale Wilsonian blather, that was false more than a century ago, can arouse war fever in working class CHRISTIANS against POST-COMMUNIST Russia ( and all these " Axis of Evil " countries ) . The collective voice of the American ruling class tells exploited and oppressed working class CHRISTIANS : " THEY are your real enemy " , these foreign people and their creepy leaders thousands of miles away ( and hardly a factor in your everyday misery in the USA ) . Naturally, deep thinker philosopher Bertrand Russell saw the villain in capitalist PRIVATE PROPERTY . And all his life was a stalwart democratic SOCIALIST ( he corresponded with like minded, world famous scientist, Albert Einstein who wrote an influential essay titled " Why Socialism ? " circa 1945 .
