Thank you for sharing that memory Ron.
Dad, ‘the eternal optimist”, made a difference in many people’s lives. He always drew people toward the light.
I don’t think for a moment that those fan mail letters would ever threaten his devotion to his wife or his family. I believe that Mom always knew that too— she just couldn’t bare his native optimism and “joie de vivre”! Such a contrast to her quiet enigmatic reserve.
They certainly were unique parents… during a unique period of history.
I don’t think they ever realized what a legacy of selflessness they both left behind. They never once taught us to be selfish. Our siblings would never become the self-absorbed narcissists that seem to be everywhere now.
When I was a teenager Mom introduced me to a book that she thought I needed to read: “ The Razors Edge” by Somerset Maugham. That book had a great impact on my understanding of life. Later, Dad highly recommended “The Keys to the Kingdom” which he and Mom had both recently read. This alone tells me what they valued more than material success.
Parents who provided us with pizza, Puccini and a love for reading. We were lucky!
Such a good memory. Thank you Ron!
Talk soon,
—Steve
