In his short biography of scientists reference book , Isaac Asimov - himself an admitted atheist but a very HUMANIST one- mentions in passing , and rather numerously, but not quite humorously , that this or that brilliant scientist committed suicide. Could it be that an over rational mind can take a person to a Black Hole abyss ? Also H.P. Lovecraft himself a hardcore materialist : [ " The sciences , each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little ; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein , that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. " ] I doubt if now world famous horror writer H. P. Lovecraft could have written so many truly creepy stories ( always involving his famous " Cosmic Horror " ) unless unconsciously he had some mysterious , metaphysical experience of Satan in this world- but would never admit it !
